Indoor Hurling

Our school teams were in action on two fronts this week.

Our girls indoor hurling team played 4 games in Martinstown on Tuesday while our boys team played in the finals of their competition on Friday.

The boys were unlucky not to come out on top in two tight games with Anglesborough NS and Knocklong NS.

Next up for the girls will be the eagerly awaited county finals of the INTO Mini Sevens where Herbertstown NS will represent the South division.

Credit Union Quiz

Herbertstown NS had a very successful night at the Millennium Centre in Caherconlish on Monday night, where our 4 quiz teams took part in the Credit Union Quiz.

The school entered 2 teams in the under 13 category and 2 teams in the under 11 category.

One of our teams in the u13 category were the overall winners and brought home the title. They received medals, a cash prize and a trophy for the school. (The school previously were winners at this stage in 1992 & 1995)

In the u11 category, both our teams were tied for second place.
Following a tie-break round, one team were awarded second place and picked up some prizes.

Congratulations to all who took part. Our u13 team now go forward to the next stage in March.

Star Award Winners

Congratulations to our Star Award winners for January! One pupil from each classroom was selected by their class teacher and the award winners were presented with certificates at today’s assembly. They were also given a night off homework for their efforts!

An extra award, decided on by Ms O’Dwyer and Mrs. Brosnan, is presented to pupils for a particular act of kindness or to pupils who have completed an exemplary piece of work in school. Well done to the latest recipient of this award.

Indoor hurling

Well done to our boys indoor hurling team who qualified for the final stage of the South competition next week. The team played games against Kilfinane NS, Hospital NS and Bruff NS before beating Ballylanders NS in a playoff to qualify.

Herbertstown NS will now play the other group winners, Knocklong NS and Anglesborough NS, in the final round.

Winter Leagues

Congratulations to Kilkenny who narrowly defeated Galway in the final of the boys winter hurling league today.

As one league ends, another begins. St Brigid’s Day marked the beginning of the girls football league.

ANALOG Learn It Lego Robitics Competition

Yesterday on Tuesday the 29th of January, 5th and 6th class took part in the Learn it Lego Robotics competition. At ten o’ clock two people called Fergal and Cormac came in to show us how to build and program our robots. We were put in to groups with a box of Mindstorm Lego and a computer between us.

The first thing we had to do was build our robots using instructions on our computers. After we had built our robots we learned how to program them, our first task was to program it to go back and forth a certain distance. When we had mastered back and forth, Cormac and Fergal laid out a map of a maze. Our task was to get around the maze without going outside the black lines, it took a lot of measuring and being precise to finally get around the maze. If you had conquered the maze you could add on the colour sensor to detect different colours.

One team containing three six class girls got to the last stage which involved building an arm for your robot and programing it to pick up a coloured cube. At the end of the day they announced the winner.

The runner up was Team 1 Lillian, Holly and Keelin, and the winners were Team 9 Ella, Eva and Chloe. Overall it was a brilliant day. The three girls will be going to the final on the 3rd of March in Analog Devices.
