Herbertstown NS pupils excel at Community Games.

Congratulations to our pupils who came home with medals in the Community Games recently.

We had medal winners in solo singing, group singing, swimming and in the team quiz. Well done all!

Indoor Hurling

Herbertstown NS participate in South Indoor Hurling Finals.

Our boys team from 4th class competed in the finals of the South Cumann na mBunscol Indoor Hurling competition today in Martinstown. The boys lost out in keenly contested games against Kilmallock, Kilbehenny and Martinstown. It was a great experience for all involved.

The Wooden Horse of Troy

2nd and 3rd class were very interested in learning about the 10 year war between the Greeks and the Trojans. They were very opinionated on the actions of Menelaus and Paris! The pupils worked in groups to create illustrations of characters from the story. They also wrote letters from Helen’s point of view and shared them with their classmates.

Learn-it-Lego Primary School Robotics Competition

On Saturday the 10th of March Eva Murnane, Jack Gleeson, Ella O’ Toole and Ava O’ Connell went to Mungret College for an Analog Devices Learn-it-Lego Primary School Robotics Competition.

At 10:45 there was an advanced Robotics workshop. All the schools got their own desk, laptop and robotic making kit. Then we set to work building our robots. At first we found it quite hard to build our robot Herby. But then we realised we could just build a normal robot and add on our own features. At 12:00 we got a lovely lunch. At 12:30 we went back to the main hall to complete our robot. After that it was time for the challenge; the robots had to sumo wrestle. We programmed the robot to attack other robots and try and push them off the ring. There was 30 schools involved in the competition and our team finished in the top 12 teams. And at the end of the day each team member got a medal. All in all we had a great day.

One pupil from each classroom was selected by their class teacher and the award winners were presented with certificates at today’s assembly. They were also given a night off homework for their efforts!

Indoor Hurling

Well done to our boys team who participated in the indoor hurling competition today in Martinstown.

Following games against Knockainey, Ballylanders and Knocklong our team qualified for the finals of the south indoor hurling competition next week. Well done boys!

Harry Greensmyth

The staff of Herbertstown National School would like to extend their sympathies to the family of Harry Greensmyth who passed away last night.

Harry gave tremendous service to Gaelic Games in the school in the past through coaching and assisting in the fielding of teams in Cumann na mBunscol competitions. Harry was also the point of contact for the school in reporting results to the local papers. More recently, Harry helped the school complete a record of participation by the school in south & county competitions in Gaelic Games going back to the 1970s. An array of resources and journals were consulted to create this extensive record and Harry was very generous with his time in facilitating this research.
