Footballers Finish 2nd in County Finals

Our Girls finished runners-up in the 2019 INTO Mini 7s football competition.

Our girls football team continued their fine year with some outstanding performances at the County INTO Mini 7s Finals in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale today.

Herbertstown NS, representing the South as the division’s champions, took on East champions Roxborough NS, Mahoonagh NS from the West and Gaelscoil Caladh an Treoigh from the City.

In the first game, Herbertstown gave a fine display and had a convincing win against Gaelscoil Caladh an Treoigh.

In the second game, Herbertstown faced off against the Celtic Image Shield holders (county 15-a-side champions) Roxborough NS. The first half was keenly contested and at the break, Roxborough held a 1 point lead. Wind assisted in the second half, the East side pulled away to get the victory.

In the final game, Herbertstown and Mahoonagh NS met having secured a win each at that point. In their best performance of the day, our girls recorded a memorable victory with some crucial goals coming in the last couple of minutes.

As mentioned, Herbertstown finished as runners-up and it was our best result at a Mini 7s County Final having finished 3rd on two occasions previously. (Boys hurling 2016, girls football 2017). Well done girls!

Mini 7s Camogie – South Final

Our girls were in real hard luck at the South INTO Mini 7s camogie finals were they lost narrowly in two games to Kilmallock NS and eventual winners Knocklong NS. In both games the girls performed very well and in the closing stages were only only a score away from the winners.

They can be very proud of their performances on the day and can now look forward to the 11 a side camogie in May.

INTO Mini 7s Hurling/Camogie

Our boys and girls teams travelled to Martinstown this week to take part in the South INTO Mini 7s blitzes.

The boys played games against Kilfinane NS and Ballylanders NS and performed very well.

The girls also played Kilfinane NS, as well as Emly NS. The girls have made it through to the South Finals next Tuesday at 10am.

Children’s Run for Fun

The Great Limerick Run and the Children’s Run for Fun is now only 50 days away!

We are encouraging as many children and parents as possible to get involved in the event as we are currently in the process of renewing our Active School Flag.

An added bonus of involvement in the event is that for every pupil that registers for the Children’s Run for Fun, the school will receive €5.

To help get ready for the run, Herbertstown NS has partnered up with Limerick Sports Partnership and for the next 6 weeks one of their coaches, Rachel, will provide some fun training & activities for the infant classes.

If you are getting involved and taking part, please let us know and we will add your name to our wall which is supporting all this year’s participants!

Training continues ahead of Mini Sevens

Training is continuing ahead of the INTO Mini Sevens hurling and camogie competitions next week. Hospital/Herbertstown hurler Michael Whelan is providing coaching for rest of the term and it is a great help to the school as it allows our camogie and hurling teams to train side by side.

Our girls mini 7s football team will contest the county final on Wednesday April 3rd in Rathkeale. It will be the second time that the school has played in the county football final, the previous occasion being in 2017. Our girls are back training ahead of what will be a great day for the school.

Herbertstown NS secures Second Place in National Awards

The school has been awarded second place in the National Cornmarket Cumann na mBunscol Awards in the Promotion of Gaelic Games and Culture category.

Members of the school staff were at the awards ceremony in Sligo on Friday night where the awards were presented. A video created in the school which highlighted the 2018 fourth class project on hurleys for the RDS Primary Science Fair was entered for consideration and the video received great plaudits on the night. The video was on display for the over 200 guests in attendance.

This morning, the current fifth class who completed the project and starred in the video, were pictured with the award and the one they received at the Fair in January 2018.

Hurling with James Ryan

A big thanks to Limerick GAA GDA James Ryan who coached all classes in the school in hurling prior to the mid-term break. The children had a lot of fun and also got excellent practise with the skills of the game. The school is working towards renewing its Active School Flag and securing GAA 5 Star Centre status and the work James did with the children was a huge help towards these goals. Well done to the boys and girls for the great effort they made with James in sometimes very cold conditions!

Indoor Hurling

Our school teams were in action on two fronts this week.

Our girls indoor hurling team played 4 games in Martinstown on Tuesday while our boys team played in the finals of their competition on Friday.

The boys were unlucky not to come out on top in two tight games with Anglesborough NS and Knocklong NS.

Next up for the girls will be the eagerly awaited county finals of the INTO Mini Sevens where Herbertstown NS will represent the South division.

Indoor hurling

Well done to our boys indoor hurling team who qualified for the final stage of the South competition next week. The team played games against Kilfinane NS, Hospital NS and Bruff NS before beating Ballylanders NS in a playoff to qualify.

Herbertstown NS will now play the other group winners, Knocklong NS and Anglesborough NS, in the final round.

Congratulations to Kilkenny who narrowly defeated Galway in the final of the boys winter hurling league today.
