Sports Day 2017

Powerful Puffins Make Principal Proud!

The 2017 Sports Day saw the introduction of teams for the first time. Every pupil in the school, from Juniors to sixth, was placed in one of six teams: Puffins, Deer, Frogs, Hares, Owls and Foxes. Points were awarded to the top five finishers in the running races, sack races and spud and spoon races. There was also an award for the team with the best team spirit. At the end of the races the points were totted up and it was The Puffins who emerged victorious. Congratulations to them and their coach, Mrs. Heelan.

Following the races the finals of the Ned Daly Shield, the Padraig Pearse Cup and the Summer Soccer League were played. These finals were the culmination of weeks of preliminary matches and the finals were closely fought contests. Congrats to Dublin who claimed the Ned Daly Shield, Mayo who captured the Pádraig Pearse Cup and France who beat England 3-2 in the final of the Summer Soccer League. Thank you to FAI Development Officer Barry McCann who came to the school to watch the soccer final and, along with Mike Bermingham of Herbertstown AFC, presented the school with footballs and equipment.

Anthony Baggott Cup 2017

Caherline NS claim victory in annual Anthony Baggott Memorial Cup

The 2017 installment of the Anthony Baggott Memorial Cup was full of excitement as Herbertstown NS, Hospital NS, Knockainey NS and Caherline NS produced some wonderful hurling. Caherline NS, participating in the event for the first time, claimed early wins against Hospital NS and Knockainey NS which booked them passage to the final. The holders, Herbertstown NS, also claimed a spot in the final thanks to victories over the same opposition.

Final

There was a fantastic atmosphere during the final as both teams played out a thrilling contest. Many of those present mentioned the high skill level amongst the players and also the sporting nature of the game. Herbertstown looked to be on their way to victory but two late goals from Caherline swung the contest in their favour. Shortly after the final whistle Eileen Baggott presented the cup to the Caherline captain.

Thank you to all those who helped to make the day a success.

Herbertstown NS welcomes All Ireland Féile winners

Herbertstown NS welcomed members of the All Ireland Féile winning panel to the school on Tuesday. The Hospital/Herbertstown team, which includes current and past pupils of the school, beat Conahy Shamrocks in the final in Nowlan Park last Sunday. Congratulations to all involved in the victory.

Friday marked the last coaching session of the year for our club connect coach Michael Whelan. The children have really enjoyed hurling with Michael during the last term and hopefully we will be back out on the playing pitch when we return in September.

Maiden Camogie Title for Herbertstown NS

History was made this morning in Martinstown as the school’s camogie team claimed a south title at their first attempt.

Herbertstown 1.02 Manister 1.00

Our camogie team travelled to Martinstown this morning having already claimed a couple of firsts for the school. It was the first year that the school entered a camogie team in the south division and following a blitz last week a place in a first final was achieved. Dozens of supporters joined parents and staff on the sidelines to cheer on the girls.

The match started at a frantic pace with Manister launching a few early attacks on the Herbertstown goal. It was the girls in maroon and white who registered the first score however as Aisling landed a free from the sideline. This spurred on the Herbertstown attack and some smart link up play involving Lauren and Holly led to a kicked attempt from Caoimhe which almost raised a green flag. Manister got themselves on the scoreboard with a goal and at half time Mainister led by 2 points.

Herbertstown started strongly in the second half and the defensive unit, which included Áine, Eva and Olivia, were tenacious in their efforts. Another free brought the gap to a solidarity point. Some nervy moments followed as numerous great attempts just tailed wide. It was starting to seem like it wasn’t going to be the girls’ day. Chloe was introduced to bolster the attack as Herbertstown refused to accept defeat. With time almost up, the ball broke to Aisling who escaped her marker and hammered a shot to the corner of the net. The final whistle sounded shortly afterwards and huge celebrations followed.

Manister principal Peter Lavin then presented a cup to a Herbertstown camogie captain for the first time. Massive congratulations to the girls and their coach Mr. Wixted!

South Retain Mackey Cup

On Tuesday evening South Limerick added the Mackey Cup to the Neville Cup won last week in Páirc na nGael.

Victories over East Limerick in the semi-final and West Limerick in the title ensured the Mackey Cup remained in the South for a second year in a row. Well done to Jack, Ross and everyone involved!

Limerick Primary Schools Athletics

Stellar performances at the Primary School Athletics in Limerick.

A 44 strong team departed for the University of Limerick this morning for the Limerick Primary School Athletics.

Our boys and girls teams participated in events like the 100, 200 and 400 metres as well as the long jump and a series of relays. The girls team performed admirably in a keenly contested category. The boys category was equally close with the result going down to the very last race. In a nail biting finish our over 12 relay team produced a fantastic team display to secure first place.  Massive congratulations to every boy and girl who took part, they did their school proud.

SPAR FAI Primary School 5s

Our boys and girls were unlucky to bow out of the FAI Soccer 5s in Corbally last week at the semi-final stage. Both teams were very unfortunate not to progress despite some excellent performances. Attention now turns to the upcoming primary school athletics and the Cumann na mBunscol hurling and camogie events.
