Symmetry All Around Us

Third and fourth class have been keeping their maths eyes peeled this week for symmetry. We went on a symmetry hunt around the school and found lots of cool examples of symmetry all around us. Have a look at some of the things we found!

Farm Visit

During February, Senior Infants and 1st class visited Pat and Elaine Barry’s farm to see the new calves.  The children really enjoyed the visit. The future of dairy farming in Herbertstown is safe!

UL Sport Kids Run for Fun

The Great Limerick Run and the UL Sport Kids Run for Fun are seventy days away. Last year over forty of our pupils took part in the UL Sport Kids Run for Fun. This was a great success for the school in a year where we were renewing our Active School Flag status. The children who took part received a special race t-shirt and a finishers medal. There was also a good number of parents, family members and staff who took part in the Great Limerick Run.

In 2017 we hope to build on last year’s success as we encourage pupils and the school community to get active and take part in an event over the May Bank holiday weekend. For every pupil who signs up for the UL Sport Kids run, the school receives €5. In 2016, this generated over €200 for the school which was used to help purchase a new set of jerseys for the school’s teams. Any monies received from participation in the 2017 event will be used to support sport and physical education in the school.

To help prepare pupils for the event, the school is going to receive 6 weeks of support from Limerick Sports Partnership. They will provide coaching once a week beginning on February 27th. This will help any person who wishes to part to gain fitness and confidence ahead of the fun event.

Here is some important information on the UL Sport Kids Run:

The UL Sport Children’s Run for Fun at the Barringtons Hospital Great Limerick Run 2017 will take place on Saturday the 29th of April. This fun event is sponsored by UL Sport and is organised by Barringtons Hospital Great Limerick Run in conjunction with Limerick Sports Partnership and the HSE.

This year four waves will take place at the University of Limerick, details listed below. There is a limit of 1000 children for each wave.

All of the runs are off road, starting at the GAA pitch beside the running track and finishing on the running track. Mums/dads/minders are welcome to join their children for the first two runs.

The cost of entry is €15 per child. €5 of each entry fee will be donated to the participant’s primary school. It is important that during registration the child’s primary school name is entered into the registration form, in order for the primary school to receive their donation.

Limerick’s Heritage – Art Competition

Well done to Aisling Farrell and Nathan Conway Lane who have achieved success in the Limerick’s Heritage Art Competition. The competition was judged by representatives of Limerick City and County Council and Limerick Education Centre.

Aisling’s picture of King John’s Castle came second in the ‘Built Heritage’ category and Nathan’s picture of Lough Gur came third in the ‘Natural Heritage’ category. It was heartening to see the artistic talent of these pupils being recognised.

Well done!

Credit Union Quiz

Herbertstown NS sent three teams to compete in the annual Credit Union Quiz in the Millennium Centre in Caherconlish on Monday January 30th.

Two teams represented the school in the u13 category and gave excellent accounts of themselves.

Our u11 team were just pipped out on first place in their competition when they recorded a very impressive score to finish second.

Well done to everyone who took part!
