Christmas Shows

Well done to all our pupils who put on fantastic shows, both at Monday’s matinee performance and on Tuesday evening. There were memorable performances throughout and great credit is due to the children for all their hard work in the last few weeks.

Well done to Mrs. Murphy, Ms. O’Dwyer and Ms. Davis who produced the shows and a big thank you to the Parents’ Association for their help over the two days. Thanks also to everyone who attended, provided prizes for the raffle and helped with costumes and sets.

FAI Primary Schools Futsal

On Thursday two teams from our third & fourth classes travelled to Cappamore to represent the school in the FAI Primary Futsal tournament. Herbertstown NS joined other schools such as Templeglantine NS, Killinure NS, Cloverfield NS and Dromtasna NS at the indoor event.

Both our girls’ and boys’ teams performed fantastically well in what was their first time participating in an event like this. The boys reached the semi-final of their tournament, losing out on penalties. The girls’ team had an impressive run which brought them to the final where they also lost out on penalties.

Despite the disappointment the pupils felt they can be very proud of themselves. The next outing for the pupils at this grade will be the indoor hurling after Christmas and another day to look forward to. Well done to Mr. Wixted, Mr. Gubbins and Breda for guiding the teams through the day.

Anti-Bullying Week

Anti-Bullying week took place from November 14th-18th. At the Junior end of the school, children shared stories about being inclusive, being kind and showing consideration to all.

Everyone in Miss Davis’ room had a secret buddy; a person randomly chosen whom they would make a great effort to be nicer to, to include in activities and whom they would look out for. Such was the success of this in the classroom, the teachers then took part in the secret buddy challenge, with one teacher getting an Aero bar as a nice Friday treat from his secret buddy:)!

Mrs Murphy’s class took part in some dramatic role play and story telling. Below are some pictures.

Mrs Brosnan chatted to all classes about being nice to others and a worry box was set up in the school.

Green Schools Committee 2016

The Green schools committee is made up of staff (Mrs Murphy, Miss Davis, Breda Kennedy, Niall Malone) and pupils from Junior Infants to Sixth Class. The ‘Litter Legions’, ‘Water Wardens’ and ‘Switch off Squad’ have been really busy since September ensuring we all maintain a green environment in Herbertstown N.S. This year we are working on ways we can save water in the school in the hope of gaining a third Green flag for the school.

NEWS: During November the pupils were involved in creating a water slogan. Stay tuned to discover the results.

Pupils fly the flag for the school

Our school has been represented with distinction in the past week on sporting and quiz fronts.

On Tuesday last, Ross & Jack were part of the South Limerick panel which defeated the City to qualify for the Sarsfield Cup Final. That final will be played on Tuesday November 22nd at 7.30pm in the Gaeilc Grounds.

On Thursday,  luck was not on the side of the South girls team, which lost narrowly to the East. Well done to Aisling and Ailish who were part of the South panel.

Later that evening, the school entered two teams in the Marie Cormack Memorial Quiz in Glenbrohane. The two teams produced stellar performances to finish in third and fifth place respectively, with 22 teams having taken part.  The third place team received a prize for finishing in the top 3. Well done to all team members!

Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Team Hope Shoebox  Appeal

3rd and 4th class have been learning about Team Hope’s Christmas Shoebox Appeal and the children it benefits. We set ourselves the target of filling two shoeboxes as a class – one for a girl and one for a boy our own age. Anyone who could brought in an item or two for the boxes and we were delighted to find out that we had brought in enough toys, clothes, stationery, games and toiletries to fill 8 boxes! These shoeboxes will be winging their way to children in need in Africa and Eastern Europe in the coming weeks thanks to the generosity of our class.

Halloween Traditions with 1st and 2nd Class

First and Second class had great fun learning about games, tales and traditions at Halloween. We played the saucer challenge; whereby choosing the plate with a rag meant one would be poor in the future, a ring showed marriage would be on the agenda, a coin meant one would have great wealth, and water meant one would travel the world. It appears the future of Herbertstown looks bright with much wealth, marriages and trips abroad!!!

Halloween Hunt 2016

Ghoulish frights awaited anyone who dared to venture outside last Friday as the pupils of Herbertstown NS went on a Halloween themed orienteering exercise on the schools grounds. The variety of costumes on show made it a great spectacle!
