Anthony Baggott Cup Returns to Herbertstown

This week, the annual Anthony Baggott Cup hurling tournament took place in Herbertstown. Thankfully, the fine spell of weather lasted long enough to give us a beautiful summer’s day which added to the occasion for both spectators and players alike.

The traditional quartet of schools were in action, Hospital NS, Herbertstown NS, Caherline NS and the holders Knockainey NS. As the round robin series of games were being played by the schools, it became apparent that the four schools were very evenly matched and some excellent hurling was on display.

The traditional junior & senior infant game also took place where the stars of the future got a chance to showcase their talents.

Following respective wins over Knockainey NS and Caherline NS, Herbertstown NS and Hospital NS met in the final. Kathleen Fitzgerald of the Liam Lynch Pipe Band led the parade around the field before the final and also performed Amhrán na bhFiann.

The first half of the final was closely contested with Herbertstown holding a 2 point lead at the break. Goals were to prove crucial in the second half as Herbertstown stretched ahead and held out for a memorable win. It must be said that Hospital NS were very impressive throughout the day and did their school proud.

Well done to our team and thank you to all who supported the tournament, especially Hospital/Herbertstown Bord na n-Óg and all the parents who donated food and refreshments for the players and supporters.

Double Success For Herbertstown NS

A wonderful year in Cumann na mBunscol was capped with a double success in the South Roinn A division.

Both our boys’ hurling team and girls’ camogie team captured the South Roinn A titles in Martinstown yesterday. They boys had victories over Hospital NS and Croom NS while the girls defeated Hospital NS and Ballylanders NS.

Well done to all involved and thanks to our great supporters on the day.

County INTO Mini 7s Finals

Well done to our girls who represented South Limerick in the county finals of the INTO Mini 7s camogie.

Herbertstown picked up a win in the first game against Crecora NS. Two defeats followed to strong opposition in Ballybrown NS and Killoughteen NS. The West champions Killoughteen were overall winners on the day.

A great experience for the girls and another memorable outing for them.

The next items on the Cumann na mBunscol calendar for the school teams will be the Roinn A hurling and football blitzes in May.

6th Class Pupils Banner

The school received a request from Hospital/Herbertstown GAA club to create a banner for their dog in the Con & Annie Kirby Memorial Stakes.

6th class worked hard either side of the Easter holidays to come up with an idea for the poster and to get it completed in time for this weekend’s final where there will be a parade of banners.

The class have created an excellent banner and we wish Hospital/Herbertstown and their dog, Ryhope Beach, all the best in the final on Friday night.

South INTO Mini 7s Finals

Our boys’ and girls’ teams were in action in the South INTO Mini 7s finals in Glenroe and played some great hurling on the day. Below is the report which featured in the Vale Star.

Glenroe GAA Club’s fabulous new astro turf facility was the setting for the finals of the South Limerick INTO Mini hurling and camogie Sevens on Monday. The spectators who came to support the schools were treated to some very entertaining games in welcome spring sunshine.

The camogie finals were first on the agenda. In the first game, Ballylanders NS and Kilbehenny NS were in action. Ballylanders were in great form and a steady stream of scores kept daylight between them and Kilbehenny for the duration of the game.

Next was the meeting of Kilbehenny NS and Herbertstown NS. Kilbehenny NS, recent winners of the South Indoor camogie title, were much improved in their second game but a hard working Herbertstown side had scores at crucial times to send them into a winner takes all final game with Ballylanders.

With a number of players who featured for South Limerick in the Neville Cup victory earlier this month playing in the sevens decider, the standard of play was high with some excellent performances on both sides. It was the free scoring Ballylanders NS team who would deservedly take the victory.
John English of the South Limerick board was on hand to present the trophy to the Ballylanders captain, Ciara Murphy.

There was no drop in the standard of fare in the boys division and the dimensions of the Glenroe venue were ideal for the sevens game, with end to end action and scores aplenty. In the first game, Scoil Mocheallog and Herbertstown NS served up a high quality game with the Kilmallock school’s ability to find the net the deciding factor.

In the second game, Scoil Dean Cussen’s direct style of play proved very effective as they saw off a spirited Herbertstown challenge.

This set up a deciding game between Scoil Dean Cussen and Scoil Mocheallog. The Golden Era for Limerick hurling is surely filtering down to the young players in South Limerick, as the skills on show were notably high. Again, the Bruff inside forwards were the difference as they held on for a memorable win.

Neville Cup Success

Massive congratulations to the Herbertstown quartet who helped South Limerick to win the Neville Cup in Rathkeale yesterday. The South defeated the East in the semi-final and then overcame the challenge of Limerick City in the final.  

In an added piece of history for our school, the South’s captain was a Herbertstown NS pupil.  Eithne Neville was present in Rathkeale to present the cup named in her honour to Lucy.

Well done girls on a fantastic achievement.

INTO Mini Sevens
