All Ireland title for Herbertstown N.S.
It was a proud night for HNS on Friday 6th March in Thurles with the school winning 1st prize for ‘Promotion Of Gaelic Games and Culture’ and 3rd place in ‘Small School of the Year’ in the Cumann na mBunscol awards ceremony sponsored by Cornmarket. Trophies were presented on the night with a total cash prize of €1000 also awarded to the school. Well done the the boys and girls for their participation and input into the winning entries, parents for always supporting games in the school and the staff for their hard work and commitment.
The ‘Promotion of Gaelic Games & Culture’ Award was based on videos produced by schools and the HNS video can be viewed here:
Indoor Hurling
Our boys team travelled to Martinstown today to participate in the South Indoor Hurling blitz.
The boys lost to a strong Hospital NS side in the opening game but followed this with a draw against Bruree NS and wins against Ballylanders NS and Athlacca NS. Well done boys.
Attention now turns to the camogie which takes place next Tuesday.
Herbertstown NS pupils take part in South Handball Blitz
6 Herbertstown N.S. players competed in the South Limerick Schools Handball blitz in John the Baptist C.S. on Monday.
Over 40 players in total were present at the event and there were some excellent games played on the ‘One Wall’ courts in Hospital.
We had 2 pupils taking part for the first time, 1 playing in his second blitz for the school and 3 players playing in their third blitz.
2 Herbertstown N.S. pupils met in the U13 B decider and provided a top class game for those who were watching on. Another one of our boys finished runner up in the U11 A competiton.
Well done to all our pupils who once again represented our school with distinction.
Larkin Shield
Hard luck to Aoibhinn who was part of the South Limerick football team which lost out to Limerick City in the semi-final of the Larkin Shield.
Munster Minor Hurling Cup in Herbertstown
Limerick Minor goalkeeper Jack Franklin was a guest of the school today and he brought the Munster Minor hurling cup to our after-school training.
Jack, who is currently the goalkeeper for John the Baptist’s Harty Cup team, gave some great tips to the children about the importance of practising the skills of the game at home.
The cup has been awarded to the Munster Minor hurling champions since the 1940s and one victory of note was that of the 1958 Limerick team who featured Herbertstown man JJ Bresnihan in the full line. Who knows, perhaps in a few years time one of the pupils present to meet Jack today might be picking up the cup themselves.
South Football Finals
Herbertstown NS clinch Roinn B Girls title for the first time but fall just short in Roinn A Boys football decider.
The South Limerick Cumann na mBunscol football finals (sponsored by Allianz) took place today in Martinstown and both our boys and girls were in action.
Boys Roinn A Final
The boys were first up in a very close contest with Croom NS. Croom got the better of the early stages and were a few points ahead until a point from Callum and a goal from Christian brought us level at the break.
A Croom point was quickly cancelled out by Riain for the boys in maroon on the resumption of play and heading towards the last few minutes a great point by our inside forward Callum seemed to have Herbertstown headed towards a victory. In the final moments however a Croom move along the endline finished with a goal and that pushed them 2 points in front.
Despite the best efforts of our boys to produce a reply we just ran out of time with Croom NS winning on a scoreline of Croom NS 1.05 Herbertstown NS 1.03.
Girls Roinn B Final
In the second game the Herbertstown girls took on neighbours Hospital NS. The initial stages of this game were keenly contested before a point from Ciara and a goal from Aoibhinn settled the Herbertstown team. 2 more goals from Aoibhinn sent Herbertstown into the break with a commanding lead.
The second half saw Herbertstown continue to press for scores with Aoibhinn, Ciara and Lucy getting on the scoresheet. Despite some excellent play from the Hospital team the Herbertstown girls in defence were able to hold out and the final score was Herbertstown NS 6.05 Hospital NS 0.00
