Roman Battle Herbertstown Style

The yard in school was turned into the coliseum for one day only last week! 3rd and 4th class designed their own shields and took part in a mock battle just as the Romans would have done. The children became true gladiators decorating their shields, practicing moving with their legions in the turtle formation and attacking the other legions with bean bags. Unfortunately, the rain brought a swift end to the gladiator battle but everyone had lots of fun!

Symmetry All Around Us

Third and fourth class have been keeping their maths eyes peeled this week for symmetry. We went on a symmetry hunt around the school and found lots of cool examples of symmetry all around us. Have a look at some of the things we found!

FAI Primary Schools Futsal

On Thursday two teams from our third & fourth classes travelled to Cappamore to represent the school in the FAI Primary Futsal tournament. Herbertstown NS joined other schools such as Templeglantine NS, Killinure NS, Cloverfield NS and Dromtasna NS at the indoor event.

Both our girls’ and boys’ teams performed fantastically well in what was their first time participating in an event like this. The boys reached the semi-final of their tournament, losing out on penalties. The girls’ team had an impressive run which brought them to the final where they also lost out on penalties.

Despite the disappointment the pupils felt they can be very proud of themselves. The next outing for the pupils at this grade will be the indoor hurling after Christmas and another day to look forward to. Well done to Mr. Wixted, Mr. Gubbins and Breda for guiding the teams through the day.

Class Trip to the Hunt Museum & Limerick Fire Station

Second & Third class went on a very enjoyable trip in October to the Hunt Museum & Limerick Fire Station. A Second class pupil Ericka had entered an art competition in the Hunt Museum and she won a prize of a guided tour of the museum for her class. The children enjoyed going on an ‘animal hunt’ in the museum where they had to find a number of animals which were depicted in paintings & statues.

On the way back to school, the class visited Limerick Fire Station. The firefighters were very generous with their time and gave the children a tour of the station and allowed them to use some of the equipment.
